St. Jordi is Catalunya’s version of Valentine’s Day and is a one day festival of romance, roses and books all inspired by the legend of Saint George on 23rd April every year.
St. Jordi is the festivity of signs. Signs represented by books and roses for the people you love. Men offer women a rose and women to men a book. But not only couples do this. Roses are also bought by grandsons to grandmothers, fathers to daughters and books from mothers to children for example.
Every village, town and city gets transformed in open markets with roses and books.
The rose is because of the legend. Although the most popular are the red ones, sign of love and esteem, you might find roses of different colours. Recently has become popular the yellow roses as symbol of friendship; white ones for innocence and orange ones as symbol of passion and desire.
At the beginning of the XX Century, the booksellers’ association, to commemorate that William Shakespeare, Miguel de Cervantes and Garcilaso de la Vega died on April the 23rd, started the tradition to offer a book to the person you love.
