The time of flowers in Catalonia

With the month of May comes the maximum splendour of spring flowering. Many Catalan towns succumb to the charms of this period and for this reason, since years they fill their urban spaces with floral elements that decorate and embellish them remarkably, and in this way, make nature come to the city.

With the purpose of bringing the essence of spring to all urban corners, private courtyards will be opened in many Catalan cities and spaces will also be set up in squares and streets.

One of the leading cities in these spring events is Girona, with its Girona Temps de flors (time of flowers). During these days of May, the urban charms of a city like Girona merge with floral ornaments that decorate its streets and squares. From the 11th to the 19th of May, visitors will be able to visit the most famous passages of the city surrounded by the floral aroma of spring. This year marks 64 years since this tradition began and continue to maintain the organization under the three initial associations plus the City of Girona. What is certain is that an event of this type needs the collaboration of the whole of Girona society, which devotes itself to show the most beautiful side of its city. In addition to the exhibition of flowers in streets, squares, gardens and courtyards, Girona complements its festival with cultural activities and an innovative gastronomic and leisure offer.

Girona was the pioneer in the organization of floral events during the month of May, but the truth is that in recent years they have proliferated in other towns that want to follow its example and dedicate a few days to the floral and spring decoration of its urban space. Examples of this are towns such as Calella, Pineda de Mar, or Malgrat de Mar, among many others on the Costa de Barcelona.

In Calella de la Costa, this event is known as Moments de Flors (Moments of Flowers) and this year it will take place during the weekend of the 25th and 26th of May 2019. It is an opportunity to visit patrimonial spaces of the city that open their doors to the public decorated with flowers and plants.

Pineda Mar de Flors (Sea of Flowers) is the name of a similar event in Pineda de Mar. During one weekend, the population shows its floral art in the streets, squares, and in the most emblematic buildings of the city.

Another example of flowering cities can be found in Malgrat de Mar with its Garric. This event includes a Competition of Balconies and Sideboards in Flower (promoted by the Association of Merchants of Malgrat), planting trees, and the star activity, the Eixida, which consists in opening to the public gardens and patios of private houses.
